This is an irrigation system that is suited for broadcasted crops or where the field has mixed crops. Water is propagated uniformly over the ground imitating the rainfall. This is a suitable option when there is plenty of water e.g. from a river, pond, or borehole. Water is pumped directly to the field without requiring secondary storage. Technology has enabled advancement from the use of steel and aluminum pipes which were expensive, heavy, and susceptible to thieves to the cheaper, lighter, and more versatile U.V. treated polyethylene pipes. The design of a sprinkler system requires much information from the ground to establish the most economical design with a proper irrigation schedule.
Sprinkler systems range from the large irrigation field set-up to much smaller systems for lawns and net house irrigation.
